Maximise Your Dining Room: Creative Solutions for Tight Spaces

Are you struggling to decorate your small home? Wondering how to make the most out of every square foot? Well I feel you. As an interior designer with experience in small-space solutions, I understand the challenge. This year, I’ve been decorating my own small apartment, focusing on an efficient layout and smart storage for our tight open-plan living and dining area. Here, I’m sharing the top three design tips I used to optimise our small dinning room —each one essential for making limited space feel functional and stylish.

Today I am covering 3 practical suggestions you can use in your small dinning room;

1. Built in Seating

is an excellent space saver for smaller dining rooms and it brings a relaxed, informal feel to entertaining. This is great for smaller families as the table can be pushed towards the bench / wall and brought out into the room when hosting. I would opt for a long cushion on the bench to add comfort and warmth to the space.

2. Extendable Tables

can be a game changer in the right space. Now I will put my hands up first and say I am not a huge fan of extendable tables, but when it comes to smaller spaces they can be the ideal solution. My partner and I decided to get one for our apartment because we loved the idea of hosting board game nights. However, the majority of the time it's just us two, so it makes no sense to have a 6-8 person sized table. I personally love the flexibility it's provided and the space saving solution it's given us.

3. Light Colours

will make the space feel bigger. Add details such as textured cushions, table cloths and napkins to add colour and depth but keep the walls neutral for the illusion of space.
